YouTube : Police Track Reckless Driver

Filed under: Countries,Cyber Culture Computer Security — info @ 9:18 pm

Police took up pursuit in cyberspace after a young Norwegian posted on the Internet video of his wild car driving. Following an electronic trail that he left online, police caught him and slapped him with real-life fine $1,300.

The Norwegian, identified only as a man in his early 20s, posted the video called “Driving in Norway” on Google Inc.’s popular video-sharing site YouTube. The recording showed the car’s speedometer hitting up to 150 miles – 240 kilometers – per hour on a public highway near Oslo.

The video was removed from the Web site after it made national news in Norway last week.

Police said they could prove only that the man had driven an average of 86 miles per hour and based the fine, which the motorist accepted, on that speed. Norway’s speed limit is as high as 62 miles per hour, though lower on most roads.

Toshiba : Wins Domain Name Arbitration Case

Toshiba America Business Solutions Inc., (TABS), has won the arbitration against Selavy Media for bad faith registration and use of the ”toshibatoner.com” domain name, from a complaint filed with the National Arbitration Forum in August 2006.

In the first of a series of battles to protect authorized Toshiba dealers business interests, TABS argued that Selavy Media did not have any right or legitimate interest in the ”toshibatoner.com” domain name, and that the name was confusingly similar to the TOSHIBA trademark. Having won the arbitration, Toshiba Corporation has been granted full rights and usage of the ”toshibatoner.com” domain.

dumping hazardous electronic waste

UN warning on e-waste ‘mountain’

The world’s richest nations are dumping hazardous electronic waste on poor African countries, says the head of the UN’s Environment Programme (Unep).

Unep estimates that up to 50 million tonnes of waste from discarded electronic goods is generated annually.

Improper disposal of e-waste can release hazardous chemicals and heavy metals into the environment.

Toxic waste

E-waste is thought to be the fastest growing part of municipal waste in the developed world.

The decreasing cost of replacing computers, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets, and the speed with which technology goes out of date, mean there is more and more to be disposed of.

Traditionally, much of the waste found its way to Asian countries such as China and India, but tighter regulations means more and more is ending up in Africa.

HAZARDOUS WASTE
1: Lead in cathode ray tube and solder
2: Arsenic in older cathode ray tubes
5: Antimony trioxide as flame retardant
4: Polybrominated flame retardants in plastic casings, cables and circuit boards
3: Selenium in circuit boards as power supply rectifier
6: Cadmium in circuit boards and semiconductors
7: Chromium in steel as corrosion protection
8: Cobalt in steel for structure and magnetivity
9: Mercury in switches and housing

Billions of Spam e-mails – UK

EVERY day, 1.5 million e-mails are sent to staff and students at Edinburgh University from the outside world – but only 125,000 of those prove to be genuine.

The rest is spam, the glut of electronic junk mail offering a range of dubious products from cheap Viagra to stock market tips or sexual services which now inundates companies and individuals on a daily basis.

Research released yesterday suggests that of the 30 million e-mails sent to UK addresses every day, 24 million are junk.

Edinburgh University, which has about 20,000 computers, is a prime target as it possesses high-speed internet connections and its own servers.

Growing menace from east of Europe

ABOUT 80 per cent of the world’s spam e-mail is generated by some 200 gangs.

According to Spamhaus, an organisation based in London, spam sent from eastern Europe is an increasing problem.

The group’s top ten of the world’s worst spammers lists four Russians, two Ukrainians, two Americans, a Hong Kong company and one in Israel. The most sophisticated gangs can send 100 million messages a day.

world’s first 24×7 Security Response Lab set up by Symantec in Pune

Filed under: Cyber Culture Computer Security,India — info @ 8:49 pm

Symantec opens world’s first round-the-clock security response lab

U.S.-based Net security leader Symantec, best known for the Norton anti-virus products, has just set up in Pune, its first “24 x 7″ Security Response Lab. It is equipped to keep tabs on the world’s Internet traffic, monitoring 40,000 of its own sensors buried in cyberspace, across 180 countries, tracking 150 million anti-virus systems — and sending two million dummy e-mails to test the Web’s defences.

The lab work is done in four shifts by Indian security specialists, backed by Symantec’s 2000-strong India-based development muscle.

The Pune Centre will work in tandem with response labs in seven other locations spread across North America, Europe and the Far East as they try and neutralise viruses, spam (unsolicited mail), phishing (trying to steal sensitive information) and `bots’ (robot-like invaders into unsuspecting computers)… often within minutes of the threats appearing.

The Pune lab is the only one that works 24 hours, 365 days of the year.
