Internet Laws Israel

The Israeli Communications minister, Ariel Atias is busy drafting a bill to block free access to pornography, violence and gambling Web sites, according to the Israeli publication Haaretz in an article published over the weekend headlined “Strictly Kosher Internet.”

The proposed bill places the onus on ISPs to implement screening technology to prevent access to porn or online gambling sites unless such access is specifically requested by a subscriber who provides proof of identity and age. Atias has apparently discussed this matter with the Justice Ministry and communications professionals, in an attempt to reach an agreement on a mode for screening content.

The bill is already attracting attention and opposition from groups that are concerned about its implications for invasion of privacy, freedom of expression and freedom of occupation, to name a few.

Digital Rights Management Finland

Digital Rights Management FinlandDRM

A Finnish court ruling is prompting questions over the wording of a European copyright directive that prohibits publishing information that could enable illegal DVD copying.

Helsinki District Court judges threw out a case against two men charged with violating copyright law for distributing code that broke the copy-protection technology on DVDs.

The code and programs allow for the decryption of DVDs using CSS (content scrambling system), a form of DRM (digital rights management) to prevent illegal copying, said Mikko Rauhala, one of the men who was charged.

In 2005, Finland passed a law that mirrors a European Union (EU) directive from 2001 dealing with copyright, according to Mikko Välimäki, Rauhala’s attorney, on his blog.

The EU directive prohibits the promotion or creation of tools to circumvent technologies designed to protect copyright as long as that technology “achieves the protection objective.”

In protest, Rauhala and other activists purposely created programs and posted information on Web forum on how to break CSS, violating the law. Then, in early 2006, Rauhala and seven other activists voluntarily turned themselves into Helsinki police.

Internet Law Germany

Germany passes controversial antihacking law

The legislation, which the German government proposed earlier last year and approved Friday with no changes, aims to crack down on the sharp rise in computer attacks in the public and private sectors.

Although Germany already has a comprehensive penal law against attacks on IT systems, the new legislation looks to close any remaining loopholes.

It defines hacking as penetrating a computer security system and gaining access to secure data, without necessarily stealing data. Offenders are defined as any individual or group that intentionally creates, spreads or purchases hacker tools designed for illegal purposes. They could face up to 10 years in prison for major offenses.

Other punishable cybercrimes include DOS (denial-of-service) attacks and computer sabotage attacks on individuals, which would extend the existing law that limited sabotage to businesses and public authorities.

Copyright and Google Images

Copyright and Google Images

LOS ANGELES  – A U.S. appeals court has said Google Inc. does not infringe the copyrights of adult entertainment company Perfect 10 Inc. by displaying small versions of its images in search results.

A U.S. District Court judge last year issued a preliminary injunction against Google, finding that Perfect 10 had submitted enough evidence to suggest that the search engine directly violated copyrights by displaying the small image, known as a “thumbnail,” even though the full-sized image was on a third party’s website.

But the judge said Google could not be held liable for the actions of a user who clicks on the thumbnail and is directed to a site that contains illegal copies of Perfect 10′s photos.

Car Satellite Navigation Systems Hacking

Motorists who use satellite navigation systems are being warned that hackers can “break in” and send bogus directions.

Using instructions available on the internet and equipment costing less than $100 available from electronic shops, pranksters, or even terrorists, could cause major disruption on the roads.

The hackers can send bogus information over the FM airwaves via transmitters and antennae, replicating messages regularly sent to satellite navigation systems by traffic monitoring companies to warn of congestion or road closures.

Cyber Police Bangalore in Action

BANGALORE: Two Americans and one Briton had launched a series of websites offering music and sex, with a back-end office in Bangalore, collected credit card details of millions across the world and reportedly swindled substantial amounts of money.

The cyber police in Bangalore had begun to unearth this fraud nearly a year after the Indian partner of the call centre complained to them about the suspicious nature of the parent company.

A few of their websites like www.mp3HQ.com were proxy websites and certain links took the visitors to porn websites.

When people visited the sites to download music or any other information they were asked to pay one dollar but were charged ten dollars.

Legal Battle for Digg.com – Web 2 Site

Legal Battle for Digg.com – Web 2 SiteDigg

Digg.com, one of the most popular sites on the Web, is bracing for a possible legal battle over refusing to remove stories containing a single 32-digit code that lets people crack HD-DVD copyright protection.

Digg’s administrators gave in to user demands to allow the story to be published, rejecting a legal notice from an anti-piracy movie industry group.

“You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company,” said company founder Kevin Rose in an online statement.

Digg.com is a “Web 2.0″ site, depending on its users to act as contributors and editors.

Digg.com was was ranked as one of the top 100 Web sites by the Internet information company Alexa that analyzes user traffic.
