Online Greeting Cards and Phishing

Online Greeting Cards and Phishing

There is a new phishing scam on the internet and this one could be especially dangerous as it plays on the interests of people who may not be computer savy. The new phishing scam is now using emails that disguise themselves as alerts about online greeting cards. There are many sites that now offer you the ability to send online greeting cards, but according to a press release from Greeting Card Association you should be careful about how you open these cards.

Most online services that offer the ability to send online greeting cards offer the recipient two ways to view their greeting cards from their loved ones. They can either go on to website from that company and enter a code to view their card, or they can click a link and view their card immediately. The press release recommends avoiding the second option even though it is more convenient. The reason for this is because this is how the phishing scams are being sent out.

A recipient will receve an email telling them they received an online version of a greeting card. The email asks them to click on a link in that email. If they click on the link they are then directed to website that is not legitamate and is quite often used to steal personal information about the person who has followed that link.

Pornography and Gujarat Government

Pornography and Gujarat Government

AHMEDABAD: The porn’s gone. Within hours of a Times Of India expose of a Gujarat government website exhibiting pornographic material, red-faced officers had sex packing — lock, stock and gay men — from the official website of the Gujarat Industries Investment Corporation (GIIC).

On Monday, TOI surfed into this company’s website and found little investment and more of sleaze, with its home page, www.giicindia.com, talking about all that’s sizzling — from “naked amateur women” to “sex toys.”

By Tuesday morning, a red-faced GIIC began damage control and took off not only the company’s website but also removed the link to GIIC provided in the Gujarat government’s official website, www.gujaratindia.com.

The link to the GIIC site was provided under the finance department. On Tuesday, the finance department had virtually “disowned” GIIC, set up to fund start-ups through equity participation, by removing any mention of it in its site.

Domain Name iPhone.com

It has been confirmed that Apple has finally succeeded in purchasing the domain name iPhone.com from Michael Kovatch. Kovatch is something of a domain name profiteer, having himself bought the iPhone.com domain in 1995 before the iPod or even the original iMac. The domain is still in Michael’s account under Domains by Proxy but Apple plans to transfer the domain in the next week. The iPhone.com domain reportedly fetched more than $1 million.

South Korea Cyber Bullies

South Korea Cyber Bullies

Cyber-bullies who plague internet chat rooms with obscene and insulting comments will be banned under the first national scheme to strip them of their anonymity.

People going online will be forced to provide their real names and social security numbers under a new law that makes internet portals responsible for policing message boards and weblogs.

The law has been introduced in South Korea, and is certain to be closely monitored by other countries where there is concern over online abuse.

Harry Potter Virus

Fans of the series should be aware that there is a new e-mail virus making its rounds.

Security companies have intercepted an e-mail promising a copy of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ — which is not due for release until July 21. But rather than getting a sneak preview of the book, impatient muggles who click on the file will instead find their PC infected by the W32/Hairy-A worm.
