Advertising on Government Websites UK

A GOVERNMENT website aimed at helping people find jobs was attacked tonight after it emerged it was advertising work at Welsh escort agencies.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Jobcentre Plus website hosts advertisements promising adults up to £100-an-hour for the role.

But a spokeswoman for a charity working with women in the sex trade said she was “shocked by the adverts which she claimed would lead women into prostitution.

One advert, promising £90-an-hour to over-18s in Cardiff, stated: “Duties involve providing clients with a personal escort service in an unsupervised environment.

Jobcentre Plus is required to advertise any legal job within the adult industry, a requirement which was confirmed in a legal test case brought by the Ann Summers company in 2003.

Intellectual Property Lawyer and Internet Domain Names

Intellectual Property Lawyer and Internet Domain Names

A Las Vegas man has agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud for impersonating an intellectual property lawyer and threatening to sue owners of certain Internet domain names.

David Dominic Scali, 28, will be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on the charge in the coming weeks.

According to court documents, from June 26, 2006, to July 6, 2006, Scali used an alias to set up an e-mail account from which he sent e-mails to various domain name owners claiming to be an intellectual property lawyer. Scali threatened to file $100,000 trademark infringement lawsuits against the owners of the Web site names unless they gave up their domain name registrations within two days.

In some of the e-mails, Scali, who sometimes used a name with the initials E.R., claimed to be an attorney affiliated with a law firm in New York. In other e-mails, he said he was a lawyer located in central California whose name began with the initials K.Y.C. and.

Woman Registers 10000 Domains

Woman Registers 10000 Domains

Zheng Qingying, a Chinese woman, was recently sued by Eurid, an institution in charge of domain name registration in Europe, because she registered over 10,000 domain names with the suffix of “.eu.”

According to relevant rules and regulations, any individual or organization in any EU country may register an unlimited number of domain names with the “.eu” suffix.

However, the huge number of names registered by Zheng aroused suspicion from Eurid, because no company is large enough to require that many names. All the domain names registered by Zheng are now frozen and she is presently incapable of selling or transferring any of them.

In response to these actions, Zheng filed a counter suit, requiring Eurid to release all her domain names. The lawsuit filed by Zheng is to be heard next week, while the one filed by Eurid is expected at least one year later.

The domain suffix of “.eu” was put into use in December 2005. There are currently more than 2.5 million websites using this suffix.

American adventurer Steve Fossett and Google

SAN FRANCISCO  — Google Inc. is best known for finding information online, but it also looks for missing people like renowned aviator Steve Fossett.

The Mountain View-based company has emerged as a potentially useful resource for search-and-rescue teams because of its connections to the dozens of contractors that provide satellite imagery for its popular Google Earth software.

Richard Branson, a British billionaire who has financed and participated in some of Fossett’s past adventures, said he and others were coordinating efforts with Google to see if any of the high-resolution pictures might include Fossett’s plane, a Bellanca Citabria Super Decathlon.

Google also helped obtain some of the satellite pictures that were used in an unsuccessful search earlier this year for acclaimed computer scientist Jim Gray after he disappeared on a yacht sailing from San Francisco. Google co-founder Sergey Brin is among the legion of young engineers who drew inspiration from Gray’s pioneering work on database software decades ago.

Pornographic Links and Indian Government

The old web address of the Central Inland Waterways Transport Corporation Ltd (CIWTC) — a Kolkata-based PSU under the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways — has been hosting a Russian site with elaborate pornographic links for over a month now.

Although the domain name expired in June last year, the CIWTC only launched its new website, www.ciwtcltd.com, recently after it found out about the pornographic links. The old site, www.ciwtc.com, is still there and still has those links.

The PSU has now filed complaints with the police and cautioned National Informatics Centre (NIC). “The website (www.ciwtc.com) was not really hacked but taken over by a Russian company as our domain name had expired. We learnt of some pornographic links displayed on the website and told National Informatics Centre, which blocked the links. So no damage has been done, said one official
