Women and Facebook

Women and Facebook

According to an Australian survey, women are more stressed out than men to keep their Facebook status updates interesting.

Many believed social media was contributing to the stress levels.

People felt the pressure to have a unique status that people will laugh at and press the ‘like’ button.

Regular Facebook logging was hampering girls in their studies and preparation for exams.

Police innovative methods in Australia

Australian police served a court order on an alleged cyber bully using the social networking site Facebook, officials said, describing it as a national first.

Victoria police got court approval to use the site after attempts to serve the order in person, over the telephone or via the post failed.

The “prolific” Facebook user was accused of, among other things, using the site to harass, bully and threaten another person, and police said they transcribed all the court documents and sent them to his Facebook inbox.

A video was also made of the order being read “as if the Respondent was being directly spoken to” and sent electronically to him.

Australia has almost nine million Facebook users.

Cyber-Safety Australia and Youth

Young Australians advise the Government on cyber-safety

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy recently welcomed 50 students from across Australia who were in Canberra to advise the Government on cyber-safety issues.

The 2010 Cyber-Safety and Youth Advisory Group (YAG) Summit involves primary and secondary school members, along with their parents and teachers, who will provide their views on a range of Government cyber-safety programs and initiatives.

The YAG Summit coincides with National Cyber Security Awareness Week and provides the Government with a great opportunity to consult with parents, teachers and young people on how to keep young Australians safe online.

During the event, Senator Conroy launched a new Cyber-safety Help Button which provides internet users, particularly children and their parents, with easy access to relevant cyber?safety information and assistance.

The key findings from all of the consultations will be reported to the Minister and presented to the Consultative Working Group on Cyber-safety by representatives of the Youth Advisory Group.

Employee emails Australia

Australian employers would be able to read their staff’s e-mails under proposed new national security laws being considered by the Federal Government.

According to reports the new laws would give companies extra powers to monitor their computer networks to prevent cyber-attacks.

They would be allowed to check staff e-mails and internet communications without their consent.

Deputy Prime Minister says the proposed changes would step up national security of Australia’s computer networks, to ensure they are safe from terrorist attack.

The report further says that privacy experts and unions will be consulted about the proposed laws.

Hacking Wireless Internet Connections Australia

A Rockhampton man who reportedly used his neighbours’ wireless internet connections to send dubious emails in an effort to extort money has been arrested in an undercover sting.

For several months, the 22-year-old man allegedly accessed other Rockhampton residents’ wireless connections and sent emails that could not be traced back to him, via his handheld computer or PDA, also accessing a “masking” service that allowed him to send the alleged threats to a variety of people using a magazine editor’s email address, Queensland police reported.

Police in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria – as well the Australian Federal Police – were involved in investigating the emails.

Rockhampton police said investigators thought they had traced the offender’s IP address to a home in the city’s north last week, however when officers arrived at the home, they discovered that the elderly couple living there had their wireless internet accessed by someone else.

The breakthrough in the case reportedly came when the man allegedly demanded money to be dropped off at a certain location and was arrested by undercover officers there.

Qantas Australia Airlines and YouTube

Qantas Australia Airlines and YouTube

An airline union will launch a global campaign on YouTube aimed at enlisting customer support against Qantas moves to slash the base pay of new customer service staff by more than $3000.

The Australian Services Union is using the popular internet site to encourage passengers to complain to Qantas about service standards.

The union hopes the YouTube clip will boost support for a campaign in which union officials have distributed postcards to passengers at airports saying: “What’s next, Geoff, working for tips?”

It says that the campaign has resulted in hundreds of protest emails and more than 1000 signed postcards from disgruntled passengers to Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon.

The YouTube clip shows a kangaroo in full flight across the landscape and notes that Qantas is “bounding ahead” with a billion-dollar profit. As it slows down, the clip asks: “But how long will they fly high if they keep cutting airport staff and customer service standards? They’re even trying to cut the minimum wages that are paid to those staff, despite paying themselves millions in executive bonuses.”

As the kangaroo stands scratching itself, the clip adds that this will mean less experienced staff on duty and longer delays.

LONDON: Manchester United have signed a gifted nine-year-old after his grandfather sent the Premier League champions a DVD showcasing the boy’s talents which has become a YouTube sensation.

Rhain Davis, who was born in England but has lived in Australia since the age of four, was hailed by the British press as the next Wayne Rooney after the United striker.

What was so unusual in Davis’s case was that his skills were brought to the attention of United’s youth scouts by the DVD submission, which could inspire other hopefuls.
