European Commission and The Digital Economy

Increased access to superfast broadband is a top priority of the European Commission’s five-year plan for the digital economy.

The European Commission’s Digital Agenda sets out proposals to connect all European citizens to broadband by 2013 and half of the European Union’s population to superfast networks with speeds of up to 100Mbps by 2020.

According to the Commission, a third of European citizens, or 150 million people, have never used the internet. Although many are elderly and have no desire or need to access the web , it said that the Continent was also suffering from a lack of skills. It warned that as a result, Europe could fail to fill 700,000 high-tech jobs by 2015.

The Digital Agenda also set out proposals to create a better defence system against cyber attacks.

European Commission, Brand Owners and Online Retailers

The European Commission unveiled revised antitrust rules allowing luxury brand owners to block online retailers without a bricks-and-mortar shop from distributing their products.

In a bid to counter criticism from online retailers such as eBay and Amazon as well as consumer groups that the provision could restrict user choice, the European Union competition watchdog said it would monitor developments.

Brand owners – often in the high-end or luxury goods market – had argued for the requirement to deter so-called free-riders, competitors who may benefit from their marketing that luxury brands carry out without bearing the same costs.
