Increased access to superfast broadband is a top priority of the European Commission’s five-year plan for the digital economy.
The European Commission’s Digital Agenda sets out proposals to connect all European citizens to broadband by 2013 and half of the European Union’s population to superfast networks with speeds of up to 100Mbps by 2020.
According to the Commission, a third of European citizens, or 150 million people, have never used the internet. Although many are elderly and have no desire or need to access the web , it said that the Continent was also suffering from a lack of skills. It warned that as a result, Europe could fail to fill 700,000 high-tech jobs by 2015.
The Digital Agenda also set out proposals to create a better defence system against cyber attacks.
