Social Networking Sites and The UK Military

The UK military should learn from the Israeli armed forces and use social networking sites such as Twitter to win public opinion, says the head of the Royal Air Force.

According the Head, the exponential growth in the availability of information means that we must understand how to deliver and protect our national interests in the cyber domain and, although this is clearly a cross-government issue, defence has a legitimate interest in the development of offensive and defensive cyber-capabilities.

New Mobile phones for enhancing Social Networking Experience

New Mobile phones for enhancing Social Networking Experience

INQ Mobile has unveiled two new 3G phones that promise to enhance the social-networking capabilities of users participating in popular online services such as Twitter and Facebook. The tweet-capable handsets also feature Skype, media sync, and instant-messaging capabilities.

INQ said it has been working closely with Twitter to develop an app for its 3G handsets so users will have an always-on connection to Twitter and Facebook after the initial log-in. The handset maker noted that this will let users tweet and re-tweet over the Internet instead of using SMS.

Software firms such as Twittermobile currently offer apps for converting selected handset models from Nokia and Sony Ericsson into full-fledged Twitter platforms. But INQ Mobile says its integrated design approach is superior to simply downloading additional software onto existing devices.

US Defence Department and Facebook Social Networking

US Defence Department and Facebook Social Networking

Washington – The US Defence Department said recently it is reviewing the use of Facebook and other social media amid concern the sites pose a cybersecurity risk for sensitive military networks.

The announcement comes after the Pentagon had overcome initial reluctance and begun to embrace Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

Previously, the Pentagon worried the social networking sites could take up precious bandwidth or that careless entries could expose military secrets.

The concern driving the latest review was the free-wheeling nature of so-called Web 2.0 sites, which are more vulnerable to hackers and cyberassault.

Regulation blogs and social networking sites

Regulation blogs and social networking sites

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is planning regulation on online viral marketing using blogs and social networking sites.

Marketeers are spending billions worldwide to get the endorsements of key bloggers and groups on social networking sites. One tactic, used by Microsoft and others, is to send products to bloggers on ‘long term loans’ on the understanding that they will comment about them on their sites.

Under the new regulations being proposed such bloggers would be legally liable if they make untrue statements about the products or services. The companies too would face sanctions.

Many feel regulating these developing media too soon may have a negative effect on blogs and other forms of viral marketing, as bloggers and other viral marketers will be discouraged from publishing content for fear of being held liable for any potentially misleading claim.

Indian Diplomats and Web 2.0 Social Networking

Indian Diplomats and Web 2.0 Social Networking

New Delhi: Indian diplomats now cannot open a Facebook account, use external e-mail services, or write blogs, thanks to new rules and much stricter firewalls aimed at preventing cyber attacks and leakage of classified information.

Over the past eight months, the Ministry of External Affairs has been overhauling its computer network security, putting up layers of barriers against intrusions into the network, officials associated with cyber security said.

A circular issued last week asked officials not to log on to social networking sites, specifically citing Facebook, Orkut and Ibibo as examples. The other prohibited practices include download of peer-to-peer music using sites like Kazaa and sharing of photos through Flickr and Picasa.

The circular also discourages using services like G-mail, Yahoo! or Hotmail for official communication. A similar circular, officials said, had been issued in the Prime Minister’s Office in December.

The missions have been told to use their official mail ID issued by the National Informatics Centre for communication.
